This past October celebrated the third year that I took down
my old Giant bike that had been hanging on my garage ceiling, dusty and unused
for nearly 20 years. I purchased the
bike from a little downtown Northville shop a year after my son was born, after
which we took many long rides through Hines Park on Saturday mornings, followed
by a nice breakfast at the local Big Boy.
Life got in the way and our Saturday mornings were filled with baseball
practice and all the other stuff that comes with raising a young family.
I don’t know what inspired me to take down that bike, haul
it up to the same little shop I bought it from so long ago, have it totally
rebuilt, and start riding again, but whatever it was…I absolutely love it! There is something to be said when you remove
all distractions in your mind, hop on a bike and ride through a scenic route on
a beautiful day.
I have begun my four month countdown to participating in the
Zoo-De-Mac ride, which is a 52 mile scenic route that begins from Boyne
Highlands and ends at Mackinaw City.
This will be my third year riding in the event. The first year was brutal! Lack of training left my limbs quite wobbly,
but I finished. Last year, I was better
prepared, but it was quite chilly….we started out at about 30 degrees at 9 am,
but enjoyed lots of sun and a pleasant temperature of almost 50 when we reached
the finish line.
The 26th Annual Zoo-De-Mack is scheduled for May
16-17, 2015. 2,500+ riders will be there,
and once you reach Mackinaw City, the party begins. Super fun event! Can hardly wait for the snow to melt and hit
the road again!
